Healthy Development for Children and Families

Child Guidance is a statewide program that promotes and supports healthy family relationships and child development. It provides prevention, education, screenings, diagnostics and short term treatment to children and families, in addition to classes and workshops for parents and professionals. Services are provided in group settings or on an individual family basis. Child Guidance’s caring staff of masters and doctoral degree-level professionals include: an audiologist, child development specialists, speech/language pathologists and behavioral health specialists. Many of the services and classes are for a minimal fee.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy is a 12-16 week, hands-on program that coaches parents on how to interact with their children whose behavior creates problems. Parents regain control and enhance their parent-child relationship, while children develop self-control. The program is for children ages 2-8 that may be described as defiant, uncontrollable, overactive, attention-seeking, extremely impulsive, etc. Fees are based on a sliding fee scale.

Educational Services

Child Guidance offers on-going classes and workshops for parents and professionals, as well as playgroups for those with young children. The Brown Bag Parenting series also gives parents the convenience of learning about popular parenting topics during the lunch hour. Many of the classes and workshops are conducted at THD sites. Pre-registration is required. Workshop topics include: 

  • Understanding infants and children from birth to 5 years
  • Help with common concerns: thumb sucking, bed-wetting, biting, hitting, nightmares, fears, toilet
  • learning, mealtime and bedtime hassles
  • Discipline and guidance techniques
  • Improving self-esteem
  • Intellectual, social & emotional growth
  • Children & divorce
  • ADHD
  • Strengthening step-families
  • Single parenting/grandparenting
  • Speech & language stimulation
  • Pre-reading/pre-writing
  • Vocal abuse
  • Stuttering
  • Communication & listening skills
  • Play skills
  • Separation & loss

In addition to its regular calendar of events, Child Guidance offers many opportunities to receive training for your group, at your facility.

  • On-site training for early childhood groups
  • On-site parenting education programs for your group or program

 Services for Child Care Providers

Child Guidance provides numerous services to child care providers for consultation and professional development in the area of early childhood development. Behavioral health specialists, child development specialists and speech pathologists can provide individually scheduled consultations, classroom guidance, staff development, and parent information. We can also serve as “participatory observers” to observe, interact and model guidance techniques.
