TULSA, OK – [October 22, 2019] \u2013 \u00a0Tulsa Health Department\u2019s Regional Prevention Coordinators, along with the Coalition Against Prescription and Substance Abuse of Tulsa, is hosting \u201cA Day in the Life: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Oklahoma\u2019s Opioid Crisis\u201d on October 30. This free forum at Tulsa Technology Center \u2013 Owasso, 10800 N. 140th E Ave, from 8:00 a.m. \u2013 4:30 p.m. encourages dialogue to better align and integrate the efforts of organizations battling the opioid epidemic in Oklahoma.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe misuse of, and addiction to opioids, prescription pain relievers, heroin and fentanyl, is a serious local and national crisis,\u201d said Stephanie Tillman, prevention specialist, alcohol & substance abuse program. \u00a0\u201cMany challenges are faced when various professions are working to prevent and reduce opioid abuse in Oklahoma. We know that many of those in this field are working in silos without the broader knowledge of what others are doing. \u00a0We are hoping to provide information and education to those who deal with everyday situations involving opioids and widen the conversation. All are welcome to attend.\u201d<\/p>\n
Multiple agencies, professions and individuals presenting will offer the opportunity for understanding the broader community response and limitations of support associated with the crisis. Topics range from recovery and prevention, first responders, policies and advocacy. The keynote and closing speakers will be Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter and Dr. Jason Beaman, clinical assistant professor and department chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at OSU Center for Health Sciences.<\/p>\n
\u201cDespite an increase in public awareness, opioid overdoses and overdose deaths still remain high,\u201d added Tillman. \u00a0\u201cThese professionals and community leaders will be sharing what they see on a daily basis as well as strategies and efforts they use to help reduce opioid misuse and abuse. The goal of the organizers is to prevent opioid overdose-related deaths in the community by raising awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n

This event is an opportunity for Tulsans to keep their old medications from falling into the wrong hands. Anyone can bring their unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs for free safe and proper disposal (no syringes, inhalers or liquids accepted).<\/p>\n
