TULSA, OK \u2013 [June 11, 2015] \u2013\u00a0\u00a0The Tulsa Health Department and Community Service Council\u2019s Healthy Start programs are partnering together to host a free Men\u2019s Health Summit on Saturday, June 13th, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the North Regional Health and Wellness Center, 5635 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.<\/p>\n
Former NFL player Spencer Tillman will deliver the keynote address.\u00a0 Tillman is a Tulsa native and knows the importance of staying healthy from his years as a running back for the Houston Oilers and San Francisco 49ers.
\n\u201cMen sometimes have the tendency to not take our health as serious as women,\u201d said Reggie Ivey, chief operating officer at the Tulsa Health Department. \u201cThe Men\u2019s Health Summit brings local health agencies together to provide men the resources to set a healthy lifestyle for themselves and their family.\u201d<\/p>\n
Along with Tillman, guests will have the opportunity to ask local doctors questions during a panel discussion.<\/p>\n
Although the summit\u2019s target audience is men, there are activities for the entire family including face-painting, a picnic, health screenings and basketball competitions.<\/p>\n
Additional sponsors of the Men\u2019s Health Summit are Morton Comprehensive Health Services, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, Tulsa County Wellness Partnership, Tobacco-Free Coalition for Tulsa County, The District Focus Group, 100 Black Men and Sanctuary Evangelistic Church.<\/p>\n
Healthy Start
\nHealthy Start works to help reduce Tulsa\u2019s infant mortality rate by providing healthy messages and support for the entire family. The federally funded program also seeks to ensure continuity of care for women and children. In addition, the Healthy Start program is committed to improving the father, parent-child relationship through fatherhood engagement. Our Fatherhood Program promotes this philosophy by linking fathers to resources that strengthen the role for the involvement of the father. This is done by organizing a group of individuals who provide preventive services and resources to new and expectant fathers, as well as to existing fathers and those who are committed to making the family healthier.<\/p>\n
