Un tanque de almacenamiento subterr\u00e1neo (UST) se refiere a un tanque y cualquier tuber\u00eda subterr\u00e1nea conectada a un tanque que tenga al menos 10% de su volumen combinado bajo tierra. Los UST se utilizan para almacenar petr\u00f3leo y aceites en estaciones de servicio de autom\u00f3viles, as\u00ed como otras sustancias peligrosas.<\/p>

En caso de fuga, derrame o desbordamiento, el riesgo de contaminaci\u00f3n del suelo y las aguas subterr\u00e1neas es excepcionalmente alto. Muchas de las impurezas liberadas por las fugas de UST incluyen compuestos org\u00e1nicos vol\u00e1tiles y petr\u00f3leo que se evaporan f\u00e1cilmente en el aire y el suelo.
