TULSA, OK \u2013\u00a0 [May 2, 2014] \u2013\u00a0The Tulsa Health Department\u2019s\u00a0Personal Responsibility Education Program\u00a0(PREP) is hosting two free teen pregnancy prevention workshops for teens and parents called \u2018Dress for the Occasion\u2019. The first workshop will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6, at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 1228 West Apache Street. A second workshop will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, at the Rudisill Library, 1520 North Hartford Avenue.<\/p>\n
Parents and teens will have the opportunity to gather both separately and together for candid discussion about sexual health, \u201cthe talk,\u201d and preventing teen pregnancy. There will also be door prizes, giveaways, food, and vendors from local organizations to provide informational resources.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The workshops are being held in recognition of the thirteenth annual National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, which is May 7.\u00a0 The purpose of the National Day is straightforward: Too many teens still think, \u201cIt can\u2019t happen to me.\u201d The National Day helps teens understand that it can happen to them and that they need to think seriously about what they would do \u201cin the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the National Day, teens nationwide are asked to visit\u00a0www.StayTeen.org\u00a0and take the National Day Quiz, which allows them and their friends to be inserted directly into the quiz\u2019s scenarios by creating personalized avatars designed to explore and play while learning some critical lessons about avoiding risky sexual situations. Throughout the quiz, teens will also have the opportunity to take snapshots of their avatars and post them to their social media pages to encourage others to take the quiz.<\/p>\n
Dress for the Occasion teen pregnancy prevention workshops are sponsored by the Tulsa Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition, the Tulsa Health Department\u2019s\u00a0Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP),\u00a0Planned Parenthood of the Heartland,\u00a0Tulsa Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, and\u00a0Youth Services of Tulsa.<\/p>\n
The Tulsa Health Department\u2019s Personal Responsibility Education Program specializes in empowering young people to make proud and responsible decisions, as well as educating them about the dangers and risks associated with sexual activity. The goal of the program is to prevent teen births and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. PREP works with schools and other youth serving organizations in Tulsa County, especially those that have the highest teen birth rates, in an effort to influence change and increase education.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
