TULSA, OK – [July 25, 2022] \u2013 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) endorsed the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices\u2019 (ACIP) recommendation of the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine for primary series vaccination in adults ages 18 and older.<\/p>\n
Novavax is a two-dose, protein-based COVID-19 vaccine, adding another option to the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines and the Johnson & Johnson viral-vector vaccine.<\/p>\n
Protein-based vaccines have been used in the United States for more than 30 years, beginning with the first licensed hepatitis B vaccine. Other familiar vaccines used in the U.S. created with the same science include those that protect against influenza and whooping cough.<\/p>\n
\u201cNovavax vaccine was created using the same science as vaccines that have been around for decades including the seasonal flu vaccine,\u201d said THD Division Chief of Preventive Health Services Priscilla Haynes. \u201cThis is another COVID-19 vaccine option that may be more appealing to individuals who are hesitant to receiving a RNA vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n
In Oklahoma, the Novavax vaccine will be available for individuals in early August. The Tulsa Health Department will begin offering the newly approved Novavax COVID-19 vaccine to individuals 18 and older as soon as the supply is received. It is anticipated the vaccine will be available before August 1. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Other COVID-19 vaccines already on the market are readily available at a variety of providers throughout Tulsa County. COVID-19 vaccines are available on an appointment basis at the following Tulsa Health Department locations.\u00a0<\/p>\n
