TULSA, OK – [April 24, 2014] – More than 30 Tulsa-area high school students will showcase their photography skills in a special exhibit, “Flash Focus: A Photo-Documentation Project about Health from the Perspective of Tulsa Youth,” on Friday, April 25 from 7:00 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the North Regional Health and Wellness Center, 5635 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
The event is the fourth annual Flash Focus. This year’s exhibit focuses on teen pregnancy prevention in the community. Each participant was invited to share up to five photographs that demonstrate their own unique perspective on preventing teen pregnancies. Previous years’ Flash Focus exhibits have included topics such as how tobacco impacts the Tulsa community and also the relationship between health disparities and “food deserts,” or areas within the Tulsa community where affordable, healthy food is difficult to obtain.
“It’s important to garner the perspective of the impact of health issues through the lens of local youth. This project is also an opportunity to educate young people, indirectly, about the importance of making responsible choices,” said Reggie Ivey, Tulsa Health Department chief operating officer. “Oklahoma is ranked second in the nation for births to girls age 15 to 19. We can’t afford to sweep this under the rug. We’ve got to engage our youth in candid dialogue about the impact of their choices on their futures.”
This year, an original documentary short film will be premiered at the event. In the short film, five Tulsa youth share their unique perspectives and thoughts on teen pregnancy prevention in the community.
The cost of the event is $15 and tickets can be purchased at the door. Light refreshments will be served.
