THD Encourages Prevention as Respiratory Illness Season Continues

TULSA, OKLA [December 17, 2024] – Tulsa Health Department public health officials remind residents of the importance of prevention measures to protect against severe respiratory illnesses, including influenza, COVID-19 and RSV.

Respiratory illness activity typically increases during the winter months. According to the Oklahoma State Department of Health, there have been 138 influenza-associated hospitalizations and two influenza deaths statewide since September 1, 2024; 27 of those hospitalizations have occurred among Tulsa County residents.

Tulsa County residents are reminded to take basic steps to curb the spread of illness, including:

  • Washing your hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Avoiding close contact with sick people.
  • Staying home if you are sick.
  • Scheduling an appointment or visit a walk-in vaccine clinic for preventive vaccines.

“Holiday gatherings, holiday travel and more time spent indoors can increase the likelihood for respiratory illnesses to spread,” said Associate Director of Prevention, Preparedness and Response Kelly VanBuskirk. “Older adults, young children, pregnant people and those with chronic or underlying health conditions are more at risk for severe complications from respiratory illnesses like flu, COVID-19 and RSV. Taking simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of infection.”

Seasonal flu vaccines and updated COVID-19 vaccines are recommended for everyone age six months and older, and help prevent serious illness, hospitalizations and death from these infections.  Vaccines are widely available at local pharmacies, health care providers and at four THD locations throughout Tulsa County. Residents can make an appointment with the Tulsa Health Department online, or by calling 918-582-9355. Walk-in opportunities are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Central Regional Health Center, North Regional Health & Wellness Center and the Sand Springs Health Center.

Please visit http://www.tulsa-health.org/flu for more information about the flu, including flu vaccination clinic locations and the Tulsa County flu surveillance report which is updated weekly on Thursdays.
