TULSA, OKLA – [July 17, 2024] – The Tulsa Health Department has partnered with the Stop DUI Task Force to host Prevention and Play, a community safety fair, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, at the Genesis Center, 4929 S. Waco Ave. Prevention and Play is a free, fun-filled community event designed for families to gather and discover beneficial organizations and agencies in Tulsa County.
“We’re excited to host this event to give families a place to have fun while learning about substance abuse prevention,” said THD prevention Specialist Kandice Lawson. “There will be various activities for families to enjoy, including games, goodie bags, face painting, music, arts and crafts, and more. In addition, there will be a variety of informational booths and resources available from local organizations with information to keep families safe and informed.”
In addition to the fun activities, organizers hope that families will learn tips and resources to prevent alcohol and substance abuse. Immunizations will also be available for families to help prepare for school.
The time period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is often the deadliest time on the roadways. According to the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, there were nine lives lost in Tulsa County due in alcohol related crashes and eight sustained minor and serious injuries between May-September 2021. This event will highlight alternatives to engaging in alcohol consumption while also touching on the importance of remaining sober when getting behind the wheel.
Event sponsors include the Coalition Against Prescription and Substance Abuse of Tulsa, Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office, Tulsa Fire Department, Domestic Violence Intervention Services, Ascension St. John, Braids by Byrd, and Amazing Grace Christian Center.
