Ring in the New Year with Safety in Mind

Happy New Year from Tulsa Health Department. Below are a few tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe this New Year’s Eve.
Safe Driving

Accidents can be more frequent on New Year’s due to drinking and driving. Choose a safe driver to ride with before activities, plan to stay the night or call an Uber. Tulsa Health Department’s Regional Prevention Coordinators program would like to extend an Uber discount code:

Stay Aware

Stay alert of what is happening around you. If you seen suspicious activity, call the police. If you see someone who is intoxicated start to drive, take their keys.

Stay Charged

Keep your phone charged and if possible bring a charging cord or portable charger wherever you go. You  may need your phone in case of an emergency or suspicious activity.

Firework Safety

Purchase fireworks from a reliable store and follow the laws in Tulsa County. Make sure you only fire them in an open area and stay clear while an adult lights them.

Pet Safety

Pets can be spooked from all the holiday excitement. In case they get loose, make sure your pet is wearing an ID tag before the night begins, and keep them in a secure location in your home.

Be a Responsible Host

If you are planning on entertaining at home, offer festive mocktails (non-alcoholic drinks) to your guests. Stop serving alcohol hours before the party ends.

Prepare for the Weather

The only thing predictable about Oklahoma weather, is that they are unpredictable. Make sure to wear plenty of layers so that you can be prepared for both indoors and outdoors. Check out Oklahoma Department of Transportation for traffic advisories, interactive maps and current road conditions.

Have fun and stay safe this holiday while ringing in the New Year!
